After featuring in several music videos, Khushalii Kumar will be seen in a family drama titled Dedh Bigha Zameen. The film, expected to be a family drama showcasing the struggle of a common man for his rights, is being shot in Jhansi. The actress spoke to BT about her experience of being in the city and of working with Pratik, who became the talk of the town last year. Excerpts:
Pratik Gandhi was the toast of showbiz last year. You're playing his leading lady in Dedh Bigha Zameen. How are things coming along for you?
Pratik is an unbelievably grounded and gifted actor. It's an inspiring experience to work with him and watch him doing his scenes with effortless ease.
Until this point, it's been an uplifting experience as an actor for me.
When you were told he will be your co-actor, did it unnerve you as he comes with tremendous experience from theatre and also has been widely appreciated for his performances in Gujarati films?
Of course! You carry your nerves to readings and rehearsals, expecting something completely different from an actor so experienced in his trade. But when he turns out to be an easy-to-work-with colleague and a great human being, you find yourself with a friend. By the time you get to the set, you know you have a buddy who completely makes you feel at home and makes life easy for you.
How did you guys go about preparing for the shoot?
We had our sessions of readings together and with the whole cast as well, plus l traveled to Jhansi way before the shoot started to get the feel of the world we will be shooting in...It always helps me to get the vibe of the place, city, the gallis and the house I will be shooting in.
*Your film is being shot in Jhansi...Currently, it's the interiors of the country that have become hotbeds for film shoots. How is it going in the city and what has been your experience of shooting there?
Jhansi is an absolutely brilliant background for the story we are trying to tell. Its culture and vibe are so different. You'll find houses which were built 80-100 years ago, and people are still using them. It's a new thing for me. The texture and tone of the film belong here. The city is unique and what it brings to the film is unachievable in studios or elsewhere.
