7 female stars talk about sexism
Be it us, regular girls or Bollywood actresses, facing sexism is an everyday affair for us ladies, irrespective of where we come from. In the virtual world, the comment section of any famous celebrity will show you how bad the situation is for public figures and how frequently they become victims of sexist trolls.
Fighting patriarchy with utmost grace, several B-town actresses have raised their voices against everyday sexism and have unabashedly called out blatant gender bias existing in society. From closing the gender pay gap to giving access to education to all women, a lot needs to be done in the fight for gender equality. And, several actresses, in their own way, have spoken against sexism and in favour of gender equality. Scroll to read!
Anushka Sharma
Actress Anushka Sharma, who is known for her straightforwardness, once spoke about sexism in the male-dominated industry, Bollywood. While speaking to film critic Anupama Chopra, the actress said, "Girls are just expected to be good-looking, look nice and just be interesting enough for a guy to be interested in you in a film. Firstly in India, I would say it is reflective of our society, that's the way we want to look at women."
She further added, "Men can work as long as they want to, even when they've aged. They're still amazing and cool, and I have no problem with that. But why is that women are only okay till they are "young and desirable"? So desirable means what? There's a sexual connotation attached. So we are looking at women in that way in films only."
Deepika Padukone
While speaking to Evening Standard in 2019, Deepika got candid about dealing with her fair share of sexism and shared, "There were lots of things I was advised . To get a boob job, do the beauty pageants. They felt it was the right way to be recognised or picked up by a Bollywood director or producer. It might be an easier way to achieve what you want to achieve. But I haven’t been that person; I’ve always followed my gut."
Kangana Ranaut
Kangana Ranaut, who was highly criticised by a section of the film industry for helming her film Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi, said, in an interview with PTI, "I'm just a new director on the block, what's the big deal? I see there is a lot of sexism involved in this- a woman, doing an epic action film and directing it. That's something even Hollywood was struggling with. When 'Wonder Woman' came people were like 'oh a woman director making an action film' but when the film worked well, they all praised a woman pulling this off. There is clearly deep-rooted sexism."
Sonam Kapoor
Sonam Kapoor spoke to a leading news portal once and opened up about sexism in the film industry. She opined that there must be a change in the manner songs' lyrics are written about women. "The way women are portrayed and talked about in the industry is not okay, and as women, we should not agree to work in those films because we are just harming ourselves," Sonam told Cosmopolitan India.
Shruti Seth
Actress Shruti Seth once wrote an open letter against sexism as she got brutally trolled for a tweet. A part of her open letter read, "How will taking a photograph nullify the misogyny and patriarchy that is so deeply entrenched in our society? Why bother to increase the number of girls being born when you choose to treat them with such indignity and disrespect? All those who trolled me incessantly for forty-eight hours, did you for once stop and think that I, too, am someone’s daughter? Did you ever ask yourselves how you’d feel if it were your daughter at the receiving end of all that hate? I’m guessing the answer is a big, resounding 'No'."
Dia Mirza
Once in an interview, Dia Mirza talked about the rampant sexism that existed in the entertainment industry during her early career days. She told Brut India, “People were thinking, writing and making sexist cinema, and I was a part of these stories. Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein has sexism in it. We live in a patriarchal society. And it is an industry that is largely led by men.”
Priyanka Chopra
In an interview with People magazine, Priyanka Chopra Jonas shared that she had once encountered the infamous sexist attitude Bollywood is famous for. She was once told by a producer that she is replaceable like every other girl that works in the industry. In her book too, she has shared several instances of everyday sexism which she faced in India and abroad.
